LNP could face legal action over unexplained political donations

The Electoral Commission of Queensland is considering taking legal action against the Liberal National Party for failing to identify who donated more than $100,000.

The LNP has failed to name 28 donations they received at the start of 2014 despite new laws set by the Labor government in March.

Under the new laws, the party was required to retrospectively declare all donations over $1,000, decreasing the threshold for declarations from $12,800.

ECQ Commissioner Walter van der Merwe told a budget estimates hearing that it had requested the information from the LNP.

He said the ECQ would seek advice about what action it could take in terms of non-compliance with the legislation.
