Local bartenders get U.G.L.Y. for a good cause

BIG-HEARTED bartenders across the Gold Coast are getting into the fundraising spirit, battling it out for the title of Queensland’s Leukaemia Foundation 2014 U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year.

The acronym U.G.L.Y. stands for Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You and is a fundraising competition run statewide in pubs, hotels, sporting clubs and RSLs, with proceeds benefiting patients living with leukaemias and other related blood disorders.

The Gold Coast will be represented in the Queensland wide fundraising competition by Peter Campbell (Southport Leagues Club), Bradley Thewlis at (Dublin Docks), Brooke Connor (First Avenue Tavern), Paolo Giancarlo Gabrielloni (Edgewater Dining and Lounge Bar), Tim Glasson (Palazzo Versace) and Christie Cameron (Kirra Beach Hotel).

The competition runs from now until Monday 8 September, with winners announced on Friday, September 12.

Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland CEO, Bill Petch said the U.G.L.Y Bartender of the Year was a great opportunity for community-minded bartenders to host a fun event and in the process raise awareness for a serious cause.

“U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year is a unique fundraising competition and an excellent opportunity for bartenders to spread the word about the work of the Leukaemia Foundation,” Mr Petch said.

Last year, the cause attracted over 250 bartenders from across the state who together raised more than $258,000.

The 2014 U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year winner who raises the most money in Queensland will receive a $3,000 travel voucher and the venue supporting the winning bartender will stand to win a Hoshizaki ice machine to the value of $7,500.

It’s not too late for other local bartenders who are proud to be U.G.L.Y. to sign up and join in the fun while making a difference to those in their community facing the ugly reality of a blood cancer diagnosis.
