Local tradie website takes out top business prize

A NEW trades and services directory website has won a $5,000 prize from Bond University’s Bond Business Accelerator – a program geared towards helping current students and alumni take their businesses from ideas stage to commercialization.

The website – www.service.com.au – was started two years ago by Bond University MBA student Ed Horwood and his business partner Jacob Banks, and already boasts more than 55,000 listings to help customers find a reliable tradie within their area.

The prize money was awarded at the inaugural Gold Coast Demo Day, a collaboration between the Faculty of Business, City of Gold Coast and local startup supporter Silicon Lakes.

The event showcased twelve of the Gold Coast’s most promising startups to a varied audience of business executives and members of the startup ecosystem.

Mr Horwood said he would use the prize money to improve the website, by adding price comparison and customer rating features in the New Year – making it easier for customers to make sure they get the best value and most reliable service.

“Search and compare websites are becoming increasingly popular – and we realised that there was a gap in the market with no online tool available to easily find a variety of trade services listings all in one place,” he said.

“Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for people to identify the best tradesperson for the job – and to give workers in small to medium or privately owned businesses an opportunity to win more work.

“We realised quite early on that a lot of independent or small business tradies didn’t understand how to best utilise the internet to their advantage to promote their services.

“It can be costly and time consuming to independently run a website, so by listing with us tradies can create a digital footprint at little or no cost and with very little effort.

“I’m thrilled to have received top prize for the Bond Business Accelerator program – this money has really accelerated our plans to update the website and deliver an even better online experience.”
