Logan Mayor to front a Crime & Corruption hearing

Logan Mayor Luke Smith will testify at a public hearing into last year’s local government elections.

The Crime and Corruption Commission is investigating funding and disclosure allegations made against candidates who stood for the Gold Coast, Moreton Bay, Ipswich and Logan City councils.

Mr Smith’s disclosure form shows he received $377,833 from Logan Futures, a company that in turn received money from dozens of developers and businesses.

The commission heard that in April a similar third-party donation system was used to bankroll the re-election of Moreton Bay mayor Allan Sutherland.

Mr Sutherland received more than $118,000 from the Moreton Futures Trust before the March 19 election.

The trust received donations from several property developers to the tune of $137,000 and went on to pay the campaign expenses of other candidates, including councillor Peter Flannery.

The commission will also hear evidence from Mr Sutherland’s 2012 election campaign director, Trent Dixon today.
