Lowndes slow in first Bathurst practice run

Defending Bathurst champ Craig Lowndes has run a surprising 23rd in today’s first practice session for the great race.

Fellow Holden driver and four-time winner Jamie Whincup was fastest around the mountain in two minutes 05.95 seconds.

“It’s great to get the weekend underway and any lap around this place is pretty cool,” Whincup said.

“But it’s at an extremely early stage, everyone is going to get quicker.”

Ford’s Fabian Coulthard was more than half a second behind him with Holden’s Tim Slade third quickest.

Ford driver Scott Pye escaped without a scratch after hitting the wall at McPhillamy Park on the top of the mountain at 200 kilometres an hour.

“It’s a fast part of the track,” Pye told reporters.

“I hit the wall pretty hard, fortunately I got away with some cosmetic damage.”

Mark Winterbottom, who is the defending series champion, was 9th fastest while the Gold Coast’s Renee Gracie was second last.

Final practice will be run later from 1515 AEST with qualifying tomorrow and Saturday.
