Luxury Audi R8 stolen at gunpoint during test drive in Sydney

An armed man is on the run after stealing a luxury Audi R8 sports car during a test drive and leading police on a dangerous chase in Sydney overnight.

The owner of the sports car, which is worth around $230,000, advertised his Audi R8 for sale and arranged to meet a prospective buyer outside a service station on Sydney Road, Balgowlah.

The pair met at 6.00pm and were test driving the vehicle when the potential buyer produced a handgun and threatened the owner.

The man was then hit with the handgun and forced out of his car, with the gunman then speeding away.

The owner quickly alerted police and the stolen vehicle was seen a short time later at Mosman where a pursuit was initiated.

Police followed the Audi into the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, before it was driven around the Woolloomooloo area, then driven back through the Harbour Tunnel.

Police were forced to terminate the pursuits several times following a number of minor collisions, including the ramming of a police car.

The gunman is described as being of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance with a thin build, possibly aged in his early 20s.

His hair is shaved at the sides and is long on top. At the time he was wearing a long, black leather jacket, black shirt and pants and white sneakers.

Police are urging anyone who sees this man, or the vehicle, NOT to approach it but to call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
