Mayhem on the M1 as crash triggers 15km traffic jam on the Gold Coast

TRAFFIC has been thrown into disarray on the Pacific Motorway following a multi-vehicle crash on the Gold Coast.

Two cars came to grief in the southbound lanes of the M1 between exits 60 and 67 at Helensvale around 11.30am.

Queensland Ambulance said three people have been taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with minor injuries.

The accident has triggered extensive delays, with traffic still backed up for more than 15km at midday.

Service roads are also becoming congested as motorists scramble to get off the motorway to avoid the delays.

Drivers caught up in the mayhem are being urged to be patient, while others are being told to delay their journey.

It comes as thousands of families hit the road for the Christmas holidays.
