Major drug tunnel from Mexico to U.S found by authorities

U.S. authorities say 12 tons of marijuana have been seized and 22 people arrested in connection with an 800 metre cross-border tunnel to Mexico.

ALEX HEINKE reports.

The U.S. attorney’s office in San Diego reported on Thursday that the passage connecting warehouses in Tijuana and San Diego was elaborate and professional.

It was well lit and ventilated and even used a rail system for the transportation of illicit substances.

Six people were arrested in the U.S. and 16 in Mexico following raids on Wednesday with two tons of marijuana seized in the U.S. and 10 in Mexico.

Local authorities say smugglers moved the first load of drugs on Wednesday and that they are confident nothing got through undetected.

U.S. Homeland Security Investigations began investigating in May.
