Officers were unable to confirm the child’s sex, age or cause of death and could not say how long the remains had been at the scene.
Forensic officers remained at the scene overnight and the area was sealed off.
An extensive investigation, including nearby door knocking, will get underway this morning.
The remains were taken to Adelaide tonight ahead of a post mortem investigation.
Police are reviewing national missing persons lists but early checks found no details of children with a similar age in South Australia.
