Man, 70, attacked with shovel, witness bashed in savage road rage attack

A 70-year-old man has been bashed over the head with a shovel, before being kicked and punched to the ground by three men during a shocking road rage attack near Canberra.

The man was driving along Southbar Road in Queanbeyan around 10.10pm last night when police said a grey Honda Accord sedan being driven erratically overtook him.

It’s alleged the male driver of the Honda then slowed down and, when both cars reached Donald Road, he and his two male passengers allegedly threatened the 70-year-old.

Police said the trio then followed the 70-year-old to Cameron Road where it’s alleged they got out of their car and attacked him.

One of the men allegedly struck the 70-year-old in the back of the head with a garden shovel, causing him to fall over.

After struggling to get back onto his feet, the three men then allegedly kicked and punched the 70-year-old back to the ground.

It’s alleged the trio then bashed a 43-year-old man who stepped in to help the 70-year-old before they took off in the Honda.

The older man suffered bruised ribs and a serious gash to his head which required sutures, while the witness was left with a bleeding nose, bruising, and swelling to his face and ribs.

Both victims were taken to Queanbeyan Hospital for treatment.

A crime scene was established and the shovel seized.

Police are still searching for the three attackers who are described as being aged between 20 to 30 with medium builds, olive skin and dark hair.

Motorists with dashcam footage who may have been in the area at the time or anyone else with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
