Man, 71, charged over alleged rape, sexual assault of child on Gold Coast

A MAN in his 70s has been arrested and charged with a long list of child sex offences following a protracted police investigation into the alleged repeated rape and sexual assault of a young child on the Gold Coast.

The 71-year-old is alleged to have repeatedly assaulted the girl for seven years, between 2010 and 2017.

Police said the girl was just eight-years-old at the time of the first alleged assault and that the majority of the offences are alleged have to been committed on the Gold Coast.

Detectives from the Gold Coast Child Protection and Investigation Unit first became aware of the allegations in February 2017 after receiving information relating to the victim.

Following what police have described as an “extensive and protracted” year-long investigation, detectives arrested the 71-year-old at Bundamba last weekend.

The Goodna man has since been charged with 19 counts of indecently treating a child, two counts of rape, and one count each of observations in breach of privacy and sexual assault.

He is scheduled to reappear at the Ipswich Magistrates Court on April 11.
