Man, 74, charged over horror axe murder in Western Australia

A 74-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder following a horrific axe attack in Perth overnight.

The horrific scenes unfolded at an apartment complex on Shakespeare Avenue in Yokine around just before 6.30pm local time on Friday.

Police said a 64-year-old woman was visiting a 73-year-old male friend at the complex when her 74-year-old former partner showed up and knocked on the door.

The 74-year-old man allegedly struck the 73-year-old man in the face with the axe as he answered the door, fatally wounding him.

The man then allegedly struck his former partner as she attempted to run from the unit. She received non-life-threatening lacerations.

Two male neighbours, believed to be aged in their 30s and 40s, intervened and tried helping the woman by restraining the man.

They also received non-life-threatening lacerations.

The 74-year-old man was arrested and has since been charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, committing an act intending to cause grievous bodily harm and breaching a violence restraining order.

He was due to appear before Perth Magistrates Court today.
