Man, 78, run over on way to club dies in hospital

An elderly man has died in hospital after he was run over by a car at Belmont in the NSW Hunter region.

Police say the 78-year-old man was crossing Ross Street with his 74-year-old wife just after 7.30pm last night when he was struck by a Toyota Camry being driven by an 81-year-old woman.

The elderly couple were on their way to a local sailing club at the time of the accident.

The 78-year-old man was rushed to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition but sadly could not be saved.

He was pronounced dead early this morning.

Police are urging witnesses to come forward and contact Lake Macquarie Police via Crime Stoppers.
