Man accused of sexually touching child in supermarket

A man has been charged after allegedly sexually touching a child at a shopping centre in NSW.

It’s understood the 11-year-old girl was shopping with a family member at a supermarket in Newcastle on Monday when the alleged assault happened.

“It is alleged a 49-year-old man sexually touched the child whilst inside the store about 2.20pm,” NSW police said.

The man then fled the supermarket with police launching a major investigation.

Following inquiries, a 49-year-old man handed himself into St Mary’s Police Station and was placed under arrest.

He has since been charged with intentional sexual touching of a child and was refused bail to appear at Penrith Local Court today.
