Man accused of trying to detain, sexually assault woman at her home

A MAN has been charged with trying to detain and sexually assault a woman at her home in Newcastle.

Police allege the 23-year-old Chinese National went to a house on Sunset Boulevard at North Lambton to “speak to one of the residents” around 11.30am on Friday.

While at the house, it’s alleged the man grabbed a 20-year-old woman and tried to sexually assault her.

Police said the woman managed to escape and flee to a nearby facility where she was able to call triple zero.

Following investigations, the man handed himself in at Waratah Police Station just before 4.30pm.

He was arrested and charged with assault with intent sexual assault and detain with intent to obtain advantage.

The 23-year-old was refused bail and is due to appear at Newcastle Local Court today.

It is not known if the man and woman are known to each other.
