Man airlifted in critical condition after brutal bashing

A MAN has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition following a brutal bashing in Far North Queensland.

Police said the 35-year-old man was involved in an altercation with a 26-year-old woman at the Mareeba Showgrounds in Mareeba about 11.45pm last night.

A short time later, the man was found unconscious on Mareeba Dimbulah Road after being attacked, police said.

The man sustained life-threatening head injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken by ambulance to Mareeba Hospital.

From there, the man was airlifted to Townsville Hospital in a critical condition.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
