Man almost beaten to death by armed intruders

A MAN and a woman armed with a samurai sword have allegedly carjacked two vehicles, stormed a stranger’s home and almost bashed a man to death during a violent crime spree in Townsville.

It all began about 4.30pm on Friday when the 20-year-old man jumped into a taxi with two other women outside a licensed venue on Charters Towers Road and asked the driver to take them to Pallarenda, 11km away.

When they arrived at their destination, it’s alleged the man punched the 25-year-old driver in the face and ordered him out of the car, while a 23-year-old woman in the back seat pulled out a knife.

The man and two women then drove off in the taxi back along Cape Pallarenda Road towards the city before dumping the cab at Jezzine Barracks.

After evading police for five hours, the man and the 23-year-old woman allegedly struck again, this time in Hyde Park, about five kilometres from where they dumped the taxi.

It’s alleged a 23-year-old man had just parked his vehicle in a gym carpark on Woolcock Street when the 20-year-old man threatened him with a samurai sword.

Police said the armed man then drove off in the victim’s car with the 23-year-old woman.

A short time later, police allegedly spotted the man waving the samurai sword out the window of the car while driving along Palmerston Street.

Officers tried intercepting the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over.

Police said they followed the stolen car for several kilometres on Ross River Road before it mounted the median strip and crossed onto the wrong side of the road.

The couple then allegedly drove the vehicle onto vacant land where they abandoned it and decamped on foot.

Police established a cordon and, while searching the area, were alerted to a man trying to barricade himself inside a stranger’s house which backs onto the vacant land.

Officers forced their way inside the home where they found the owner, a 69-year-old man, suffering life-threatening injuries after allegedly being attacked by the couple.

The man and the woman had allegedly stormed the man’s home in a desperate attempt to avoid being captured.

They were arrested inside the home, while the owner was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Police said the 69-year-old man has sustained “multiple head and other injuries” in the savage attack.

He did not know his attackers.

The 23-year-old man has been charged with armed robbery in company with violence, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, grievous bodily harm, common assault, dangerous operation of a vehicle, entering a dwelling with intent, and wilful damage.

The 20-year-old woman has been charged with armed robbery in company with violence, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, grievous bodily harm, entering a dwelling with intent and wilful damage.

Both were due to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court today.
