Man arrested for sexual assault offences escapes custody

Residents in the Ravenshoe area are being urged not to approach a man who is still on the run this morning after escaping lawful police custody yesterday afternoon.

An extensive search of the area has failed to locate the 25-year-old man, who was last seen wearing bright yellow shorts, a green and grey t-shirt and handcuffed at the front.

The escapee was arrested yesterday afternoon and was in the process of being transported from Ravenshoe Police Station to the Mareeba Watchhouse.

During the transition, he made a break for it as he was being transferred into a more secure vehicle.

He was last seen running into nearby bush land, still in handcuffs.

The man is described as Caucasian in appearance, around 175 cm tall and has a proportionate build.

Police and dog squads attempted to chase and track the man, though heavy rain hampered their efforts and the man is still on the run in the area.

The search and further investigations continue today, with Police requesting anyone with information come forward.
