Man charged with murder after woman found dead in Sydney unit

UPDATE @ May 16, 7.30am: A man has been charged with the murder of his mother after her body was discovered inside a home in Sydney’s south.

Around 6.45am on Monday, emergency crews were called to a Sylvania unit following reports of a concern for welfare.

Upon arrival, police located the body of a 55-year-old woman inside.

A 28-year-old man was arrested on The Princes Highway at St Peters after the vehicle he was driving was detected by Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology.

The man, believed to be the victim’s son, was taken to Newtown Police Station where he was later charged with murder.

He has been refused bail to appear at Newtown Local Court today.

EARLIER @ May 15, 9.20am: A man has been arrested after a woman was found dead in a unit in Sydney’s south this morning.

Around 6.45am, emergency crews were called to a Sylvania unit following reports of a concern for welfare.

Upon arrival, police located the body of a 55-year-old woman inside.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on The Princes Highway at St Peters a short time after the gruesome discovery.

He has been taken to Newtown Police Station where he is currently assisting with inquiries.

Police say the woman’s death is being treated as suspicious and a crime scene has been established.
