Man charged over random one-punch attack in Surfers Paradise

A SOUTHPORT man has been arrested and charged after allegedly punching a stranger in the back of the head outside a Gold Coast nightclub last night.

Police said a 19-year-old man visiting the coast from Wyong in New South Wales was leaving a licenced venue on Orchid Avenue in Surfers Paradise around 1.50am when he was attacked.

It’s alleged a man from Southport, also aged 19, walked up behind the victim and randomly punched him in the back of the head.

The 19-year-old man from New South Wales sustained head injuries after falling and slamming his head on the ground.

He was treated and stabilised by paramedics at the scene before being rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital where he remains this afternoon in a stable condition.

Police said he is expected to be released sometime later today.

The 19-year-old Southport man accused of the attack was arrested and has since been charged with assault.

He is expected to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday, September 15.

Police confirmed the two men are not known to each other.
