Man attacked by shark in northern NSW

A MAN has been attacked by a shark near Ballina, in northern NSW this morning.

It’s understood the victim, a 43-year-old local man, was bitten on the calf while surfing at Shelly Beach around 7.00am.

According to local media, the man fought the shark off with his board before making his way to shore.

He’s believed to have driven himself to Lismore Base Hospital where he’s currently receiving treatment for the wound.

All beaches in the area have been closed for 24 hours with people being warned to stay out of the water.

The incident comes just two days after a Victorian man died after being attacked by a shark while paddleboarding with friends at Cid Harbour in the Whitsundays.
