Teen boy attacked by shark at NSW beach

A teenage surfer has been attacked by a shark at a beach on the NSW north coast.

The attack occurred at Ballina’s Lighthouse Beach just after 9.00am, paramedics confirmed.

The 17-year-old has been rushed to Lismore Base Hospital for treatment for a bite wound to his hip.


A NSW Department of Primary Industries Helicopter has been diverted to the area for aerial surveillance, while the Ballina Lifeguard Jet Ski is currently conducting roving patrols on the water.

The species of shark involved in the incident is not yet known.

Lennox Head, Sharpes Beach, Shelly Beach (Ballina), Lighthouse Beach have all been closed for the next 24 hours.

The attack comes just 10 months after a 20-year-old man was mauled at the same beach.
