Man attacks firefighters with axe after arson rampage

A MAN has been arrested after allegedly setting cars and a house on fire in Melbourne, before threatening firefighters with an axe.

It’s understood the 25-year-old set a car, ute and a vacant house on fire in Meadow Heights on Sunday night before going after fire crews.

The firefighters turned their hose on the man but he allegedly came at them again and tried to set fire to their truck.

Police say he threatened two people down the street with the axe and stole their wallets before being subdued by the dog squad.

He suffered bite wounds and was taken to hospital where he remains under police guard.
