Police are investigating following an alleged act of animal cruelty at Inverell last week.
About 7am Sunday 4 October 2015, a man returned to a property on Henderson Street, after walking his own dogs, when he discovered an unknown dog in the backyard.
Police have been told the man used a shovel to strike the dog a number of times over the head, before striking the animal with a hammer.

The dog died at the location.
As investigations into the incident continue, police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
The owner of the premises is assisting police with their inquiries.
