Man charged after stolen car set alight on Gold Coast road

A man has been charged after allegedly setting fire to a stolen vehicle in the middle of a busy Gold Coast road.

The Toyota Hilux burst into flames on Southport Nerang Rd at Molendinar around 2.30 on Saturday afternoon.

Police allege a man had earlier poured accelerant over another stolen vehicle, a Nissan Navara, that had been parked at Kelsie Circuit in Nerang before a Molotov cocktail was placed in the back seat.

Police were informed and a tow truck was called to retrieve the Navara.

The man is accused of later following the tow truck in the Hilux before crashing into the rear of it.

Accelerants inside the Hilux ignited with fire erupting inside the vehicle.

Police believe the accelerants were intended for the Navara.

The man fled the scene after grabbing something from the passenger side of the Hilux.

Investigations led to the arrest of a 39-year-old Southport man in Elanora on Monday with the man suffering badly burnt hands.

He has since been charged with two counts of stealing and one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, arson and receiving tainted property and is due in Southport Magistrates Court today.
