Police say the specialist fire vehicle was taken from the Beenleigh Fire and Rescue Station at around 9.20am on Saturday.

GPS software installed on the truck allowed officers to track it to Tamborine Mountain – more than 20km away.

Around 30 minutes later, police stopped the vehicle by deploying tyre-deflating stingers on Tamborine Mountain Road.

No one was physically injured and the truck was not damaged except for the tyres.

The 25-year-old male driver from Wynnum West was charged with the unlawful use of a motor vehicle and unlicensed driving.

He is due to appear in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on May 19.
