Man charged with assaulting Tweed Police dog

A man will have surgery today after leading Police on a wild chase through the Tweed region.

The 27-year-old was spotted driving a car with no registration plates on Kyogle Road at Byangum, south of Murwillumbah, around 11am on Tuesday.

He was ordered to pull over but allegedly got out of vehicle and ran off, heading through bushes and scrub towards the Tweed River.

With the assistance of Queensland PolAir and a NSW Police dog, a perimeter was set up near Old Lismore Road to locate the man.

He allegedly assaulted the police dog, but was eventually arrested.

He was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital to have surgery on unknown injuries.

The dog is not believed to have been injured at this stage.
