Man charged over brutal dog killing in NSW

A MAN has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly beating his dog to death on the NSW North Coast.

The 51-year-old is accused of tying the dog to a tree and brutally beating it over the head until it died in the small seaside town of Brunswick Heads, north of Byron Bay on Tuesday morning.

Police were called and found the man at a community centre. They say he eventually led officers to the spot where he had buried the dog, which was then exhumed by council rangers.

The 51-year-old was then arrested and taken to Byron Bay Police Station where he was charged with aggravated cruelty upon an animal.

He was remanded in custody overnight and due to appear in Tweed Heads Local Court today.
