Man charged following fire at abandoned Gold Coast home

A man has been charged following a fire at an abandoned house in Paradise Point overnight.

Emergency crews were called to the home on Falkinder Avenue just after 8.00pm, following reports of a blaze.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesperson told myGC that upon arrival, two crews found a “single storey structure alight”, with smoke issuing from the property.

Thankfully it didn’t take crews too long to bring it under control.

It’s understood a man was allegedly squatting in the abandoned home, with reports a cigarette butt may have caused the blaze.

A 48-year-old man has since been charged with wilful damage.

He’s due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on August 26, 2020.
