A WOMAN is fighting for her life in hospital after being hacked with an axe in a remote north Queensland town.
Police say the 25-year-old woman was repeatedly struck with the wood cutting tool in the community of Doomadgee, around 300km north of Mount Isa, just before 3am on Wednesday.
She suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in a critical but stable condition in Townsville Base Hospital.

A 36-year-old man who police say is known to the victim has been arrested and charged over the horrific assault.
The Doomadgee local was due to front Mount Isa Magistrates Court today, charged with one count of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.
