Man charged over alleged rape of prisoners in Qld

A MAN has been charged with more than 90 offences following an ongoing investigation into the alleged rape of prisoners within Queensland Correctional Centres.

Police said detectives launched ‘Operation Mike Reduce’ after receiving a number of complaints about the rape of inmates during 1994 and 2014.

In 2015, a 47-year-old man was charged with three counts of rape and three counts of assault with intent to commit rape as a result of the operation.

Following further investigations, a number of alleged historical victims were identified and the man was issued with a Notice to Appear on a further 26 charges.

Police say investigations have continued and further victims were identified resulting in the man being charged with another 60 offences including assault with attempt to rape, rape, indecent assault, sexual assault and deprivation of liberty.

The 47-year-old, who is currently serving a sentence for similar offences in a Queensland Correctional Centre, is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning.

Detectives are urging anyone who believes they may be a victim, or anyone with information, to contact them.
