Man charged over alleged sexual assault of woman in Gold Coast taxi

Police have tracked down a man accused of sexually assaulting a young woman as she slept in a Gold Coast taxi.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday, August 25 as the maxi-cab was taking the 20-year-old woman from Broadbeach to Palm Beach.

It’s understood the taxi stopped to pick up the woman around 4am, when a man approached the cab and asked if they were heading towards Tallebudgera before jumping into the back of the vehicle.

Police say that during the journey, the man reached forward to the front passenger seat where the young woman was sleeping and indecently assaulted her for around two minutes.

The taxi driver noticed what was happening when he went to drop the woman off on Tahiti Avenue and told the man to stop.

The woman’s alleged attacker then jumped out of the cab before opening the passenger door where he tried to force the woman out.

The taxi driver quickly drove off, but the man managed to grab onto the maxi-cab’s sliding door, ripping it off its hinges

Following a major public appeal, a 51-year-old man from Tallebudgera was taken into custody overnight.

He’s been charged with one count each of sexual assault and wilful damage and is due to appear in Southport Court on November 28.
