Man charged over brutal tomahawk attack

A man has been arrested following a brutal tomahawk attack near Newcastle.

About 11.40am on Wednesday 30 September 2015, two men became involved in an argument outside a house on Upfold Street, Mayfield.

During the argument, one man sustained injuries to his neck after he was attacked with a tomahawk.


Emergency services were called to the premises; however the alleged offender had already fled the location.

A 34-year-old man was treated at the scene by Ambulance Paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for emergency surgery. He remains in hospital.

After making inquiries into the incident, police attended a home on Upfold Street, Mayfield, around 4.40pm yesterday (Thursday 1 October 2015). There, they arrested a 37-year-old man.

He was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with reckless wounding with intent.

Bail refused, he is scheduled to appear before Newcastle Local Court today (Friday 2 October 2015).
