Man charged over cruel attack on possum

A MAN has been charged with serious animal cruelty after he was allegedly filmed torturing a possum in a cruel, prolonged attack in Queensland.

Police and the RSPCA began investigating after a copy of the shocking video was provided to officers.

The man can be seen in the disturbing footage squeezing the back of the possum’s neck before placing the animal on a concrete barricade in the middle of a street and pushing down on its throat.


Police said the man then allegedly threw the possum into the middle of the road.

The animal can be heard screaming out in pain in the footage.

Following extensive enquiries and reviewing CCTV footage, police were able to pin point the location of the attack.

It’s alleged the have occurred at the intersection of Grey Street and St Georges Terrace on Sunday, February 3.

A 21-year-old man was arrested on Friday afternoon and charged with one count of serious animal cruelty.

He was released on bail and is due to appear in St George Magistrates Court on March 12.

“Police would like to thank the community for their assistance in bringing matters of serious animal cruelty to the attention of officers and the RSPCA,” the Queensland Police Service said in a statement.
