Man charged over Gold Coast arson attack

Police have arrested one of the two bumbling arsonists caught on camera allegedly setting fire to a vehicle in Nerang last week.

The two men were captured on CCTV entering a residential complex on Riverview Road just before 1am on March 2.

The security footage shows the two men allegedly pouring petrol from a jerrycan over a Honda Civic, belonging to a 32-year-old female resident, before setting it alight.

The fire destroyed the Honda and damaged a Mitsubishi Colt vehicle parked next to it belonging to a 28-year-old male resident.

The CCTV also captured the moment the pair ran from the scene, crashing into each other and falling to the ground in their escape efforts.

One of the alleged culprits, a 23-year-old Nerang man, handed himself into the Nerang Police Station on Thursday and has been charged with one count of arson.

He will face court later this month.

Police are still on the hunt for the second man.
