Man charged over high-speed M1 rampage on the Gold Coast

A man has been charged with numerous offences after a frightening high-speed rampage on the M1 on Monday afternoon that saw innocent drivers forced off the road.

Police received numerous calls around midday about a speeding motorist who was forcing other cars off the road as he drove south on the motorway from Ormeau.

Officers gave chase and it’s alleged the driver also tried to force police cars off the road as he tried to get away.

The vehicle finally came to a stop in Gaven after it ran out of petrol.

When police tried to arrest the driver, he allegedly assaulted two police officers and attempted to steal a police car before he was finally detained.

The 35-year-old man remains in police custody after being transported to Gold Coast University Hospital for medical attention.

Two police officers received treatment for minor injuries.

The man has since been charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle whilst adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possess dangerous drugs and three counts of serious assault police officer.

He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court later today.
