Man charged after police uncover machine gun factory on the Gold Coast

A MAN has been arrested and charged following the discovery of a frightening large-scale weapons factory on the Gold Coast, capable of producing fully automatic machine guns.

The factory was uncovered during a major police operation codenamed Oscar Quantum late last year.

Officers from the Drug and Serious Crimes Group, Gold Coast Police and the Australian Border Force stumbled across the factory during a raid on a business at Nerang.

The factory contained drill presses, lathes and other equipment used to produce fully automatic machine guns.

During a search of the premises, police allegedly found four homemade machine guns, three silencers, computer equipment, ammunition, magazines, a taser, drugs and other gun parts.

Today, and as a result of ongoing investigations, a 36-year-old man was charged with two counts of unlawfully possessing category R weapons and two counts of manufacturing weapons whilst not licensed.

He will appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on June 27.
