Man charged with trying to set Brisbane backpackers hostel alight

A man has been charged over the attempted arson of a backpackers hostel in Fortitude Valley overnight.

Police said around 6.40pm, a 28-year-old man broke into the hostel by smashing a window before using an accelerant to start a fire within one of the rooms in the building.

Fire alarms inside the hostel activated, forcing the evacuation of everyone inside the building.

The man then allegedly fled through the smashed window before he was tracked down by another man in a nearby caraprk and arrested by police.

The Brisbane man was charged with one count each of attempted arson and entering a premises with intent to commit an indictable offence.

He is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court today.

No one was injured in the blaze.
