Man charged with assaulting woman and setting Gold Coast home, car on fire

A 31-year-old man will appear in court today accused of bashing a woman and setting her home and car on fire in Upper Coomera.

Police will allege the man assaulted a 29-year-old woman, who was known to him, at a property on Heather Drive around 9.00pm on Saturday night before pouring accelerant through the home as well as her car and then lighting it.

Neighbours were quick to notice the blaze and called emergency services before running to help extinguish the flames.

The car was completely destroyed but the quick thinking of residents and fire fighters helped stop the blaze from spreading too badly through the home.

The woman suffered injuries to her face and arms and was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

Police tracked a 31-year-old man down in northern New South Wales on Monday morning before he was extradited back to Queensland.

He has since been charged with arson, endangering property by fire, assault occasioning bodily harm and wilful damage.

He is scheduled to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court today, Tuesday March 12.
