Accused drunk driver ploughs through cemetery, destroying gravesites

A community in far north Queensland has been left devastated after an alleged drunk driver ploughed his car through the local cemetery.

The 45-year-old is accused of ramming his dual cab ute over grave sites and memorials in Mareeba Cemetery, reducing them to rubble, around 7.45pm on Saturday.

He left a path of destruction in his wake, damaging a number of graves, including head stones and fencing.

Police have charged the man with one count each of wilful damage, driving under the influence of alcohol and obstructing police while intoxicated.

He will appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on December 11.
