Man charged with murdering inmate at maximum security prison

UPDATE @ 5.45AM FEB 12: A man has been charged with murdering an inmate at a maximum security prison in NSW.

Officers were called to the facility at Silverwater around 3.30pm on Friday after a 54-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by another inmate.

Paramedics treated the man before rushing him to hospital.

He died a short time later.

A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers.

Following inquiries, a 44-year-old inmate was arrested by investigators about 9.50pm on Sunday.

He was charged with murder.

The man was refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court today.

EARLIER @ 11.50AM FEB 11: AN INMATE has died after reportedly being strangled at a maximum security prison in NSW.

The 54-year-old man was found unconscious in his cell at Silverwater’s Metropolitan Reception and Remand Centre on Friday afternoon.

The man was rushed to Westmead Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The death is being investigated by Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police.
