Man ‘critical’, run over and left to die on side of Melbourne road

A MAN is lucky to be alive today after he was run over by a car and left to die on the side of a road in Melbourne’s west.

The 35-year-old man was found lying in a gutter on Westmelton Drive in Melton West just after 1am this morning.

Police said he was critically injured, with severe laceration wounds to the back of his head.

He was rushed to hospital where it’s understood he remains today in a critical condition.

The area was cordoned off and Westmelton Drive closed for several hours while forensic investigators examined the scene.

Police said while officers were processing the scene of the crash, a 22-year-old man who is believed to have been the driver of the vehicle involved called triple zero and handed himself into police.

A silver hatchback-type vehicle with significant front-end damage and a smashed windscreen was found abandoned in a cow paddock around five kilometres away from the scene of the hit-and-run.

The 22-year-old is this afternoon assisting police with their enquiries.

No charges have yet been laid.
