Police say initial information indicated a utility was travelling northbound before it lost control and rolled approximately 500m north of Exit 45 shortly before 2pm.

The sole occupant of the vehicle, a man believed to be in his 50s, has been transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital with serious head injuries.

Two of the northbound lanes have been closed which has had a profound impact on traffic, with heavy delays being experienced.
