Man crushed to death while visiting cemetery

A MAN has been crushed to death in a freak accident while visiting the largest cemetery in the southern hemisphere in Sydney.

It happened on Haslem Drive at the Rookwood Cemetery (officially called the Rookwood Necropolis) on Friday morning.

The man was reportedly changing a flat tyre on his car when the vehicle slipped off the jack and fell on top of him around 10.15am.

Despite the best efforts of police and paramedics, the 39-year-old man could not be saved and died at the scene.

Officers attached to Auburn Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced inquiries.

The Rookwood Cemetery is the largest necropolis in the southern hemisphere, with more than 1 million interments.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and will prepare a report for the Coroner.
