Garbage truck driver charged after man killed while sleeping on mattress

UPDATE @ May 22, 1.20 PM: The driver of a garbage truck has been charged after a man was run over and killed whilst sleeping on a mattress outside the front of a Sydney home.

Police said the 35-year-old man was driving a garbage truck along Bourke Lane in Redfern around 8am on Monday, when he allegedly drove onto the footpath, running over the sleeping man.

The driver stopped and called for emergency assistance; however, the 31-year-old man died at the scene.


The driver was taken to Sydney Eye Hospital for mandatory testing before being taken to Redfern Police Station where he was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, and negligent driving occasioning death.

His licence has been suspended and confiscated.

The man, from Rockdale, was granted bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on Monday 18 June.

EARLIER @ May 21, 11.20 AM: A MAN has been killed after being run over by a garbage truck in Sydney this morning.

The terrible accident happened on Bourke Lane in Redfern around 8.00am.

The critically injured man was treated at the scene by paramedics, however sadly, he was unable to be revived.

Police say his age is not known at this stage and he is yet to be formally identified.

The driver of the garbage truck, a man believed to be aged in his 30s, has been taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for mandatory testing.

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
