Pair charged after man bashed to death in car park of Wagga motel

UPDATE 12:10PM | TWO men have been charged after a man was allegedly bashed to death in the car park of a motel in Wagga Wagga overnight.

Emergency crews were called to the Ashmont Inn Hotel Motel on Tobruk Street around 9.45pm following reports that a man had been assaulted.

They arrived to find the 34-year-old victim lying unconscious on the ground in the car park. Despite the desperate efforts of paramedics to revive the man, he died at the scene.

A 28-year-old man was arrested a short time later at a home on Marshall Street in Ashmont. He was suffering from a head injury and taken to the Wagga Rural Referral Hosptial for treatment.

He has since been charged with affray and has been refused bail to appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court tomorrow.

A second man, aged 29, surrended to Wagga Wagga Police Station just before midnight. He was arrested and has since been charged with assault cause death by person 18 years or more, intoxicate, and affray.

He too was refused bail to appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court tomorrow.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

EARLIER: Police want to hear from anyone who saw what happened to a man at Wagga Wagga on Saturday night.

Emergency services were called to a car park on Tobruk Street at around 9.45pm, amid reports someone had been assaulted.

When Officers arrived, they found a man who wasn’t conscious.

Paramedics began First Aid but the 34-year-old couldn’t be saved.

A crime scene was established and examined by forensic specialists.

A 28-year-old man was arrested a short time later at a home on Marshall Street, Ashmont. He was taken to hospital to be treated for a head injury and remains there under police guard.

A second man, 29, attended Wagga Wagga Police Station just after 11.30pm, and continues to assist police with inquiries.
