AN early morning surf has turned to tragedy, with a man drowning at a popular southern Gold Coast beach this morning.
The man, aged in his 70s, was surfing off Snapper Rocks at Greenmount Beach in Coolangatta when he came into trouble around 4.40am.
Witnesses have told myGC that a surfboard is believed to have hit the man in the head, knocking him into the water.

Members of the public pulled the surfer unconscious from the ocean while emergency services rushed to the scene.
Queensland Ambulance paramedics desperately worked to save the man, but sadly he could not be revived and was pronounced deceased.
