Man dobs himself in by reporting stolen phone that contains child pornography

A man has been charged after police discovered child abuse material on a phone that he had reported stolen earlier this year.

The phone, reported missing by a 36-year-old Marrickville man in March this year, was found by police only two days later.

Police stopped a man on George Street in the Sydney CBD and during the search, police located the stolen phone.

The man was arrested and charged, with his matters currently before the courts.

Officers examined the contents of the phone and, in the process, discovered it contained child abuse material. Inquiries revealed that the child abuse material had been stored on the phone prior to it being stolen on 15 March.

Shortly before midday yesterday (Thursday 1 October 2015), police attended a home on Gorman Street, Marrickville, where they arrested a 36-year-old man.

He was taken to Newtown Police Station and charged with accessing and transmitting child pornography.

Granted conditional bail, he is scheduled to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on 22 October 2015.
