Man drowns at popular Gold Coast beach

Tragedy on a popular Gold Coast beach this morning, with a man drowning while going for an early morning swim.

It’s understood the 70-year-old was in the water near the North Burleigh Surf Club around 7am when he got in to trouble.

Paramedics worked on the man for some time after he was pulled from the water unconscious but he could not be saved.


Police are looking in to whether he may have suffered a medical condition.

It follows a near drowning in Surfers Paradise that landed a man in hospital on Thursday night.

It’s understood he got stuck in a rip and swallowed a large amount of water around 6.20pm.

The Queensland Ambulance Service treated a man at the scene near Elkhorn Avenue before taking him to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
