Man fighting for life, unit block evacuated after ferocious fire

A man is in a critical condition after a large blaze broke out inside a Gold Coast apartment overnight.

Emergency crews were called to a unit block on Duet Drive at Mermaid Waters about 11.45pm on Sunday.

Upon arrival, they found smoke issuing from one of eight units at the complex and immediately leapt into action.

A Queensland Police spokesperson told myGC a 45-year-old man was carried out of the unit “possibly suffering smoke inhalation”.

He was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

A 20-year-old man who also lived in the unit was taken to hospital in a stable condition suffering suspected smoke inhalation.

The rest of the apartment block was also evacuated but fortunately, no one else was injured and fire crews managed to contain the fire to the one unit.

It’s believed the fire began in the kitchen, however, investigations are ongoing.

The blaze is considered to be non-suspicious.
